Successful Hiring

You’ve just hired your last employee. You’re now fully staffed. Time to rest? Unfortunately, no. Most people know that selecting the best person for the position is important. To this end, you post your position, you interview several candidates, you do reference checks, and background checks even before they start employment. But your work isn’t done. The chances of turnover can be high during the first year. So, what can you do to help retain your employees and to ensure they remain engaged?

First, you’ll want to make sure that you communicate closely with your new hire. Ensure that they understand your organization’s mission, vision, and values. Make sure they also understand your organization’s long-term and short-term goals, strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and challenges and what you expect from them. They should also have a copy of your written job description for their position. Let them know what you are expecting from them during their introductory period and offer them the needed resources to get the job done. Then provide them with all the tools, equipment, policies, procedures, and accesses, that they need.

Set them up with a mentor at work, a good performer with good people skills, who can help them learn the ropes and the ins and outs of those processes. Check in with them periodically to see how they are doing and if they need anything from you. Review their work product and provide both positive and constructive feedback.

If that employee is doing well, make sure that they know they are valued. If the employee is struggling despite all your attempts at helping them be successful, it may be the time to start considering whether the employment relationship still makes sense for the two of you. If you would like more information on how to implement processes to retain your employees and keep them engaged, contact Southwestern HR Consulting (SWHRC) today to speak with a representative and learn about our services and our team of experts.
