Post-pandemic hiring has opened up a plethora of challenges. The number of individuals available to be hired for jobs is less than the available jobs in many cases. Businesses are encountering hard-to-fill positions and many businesses are reducing hours of service or are otherwise working with skeleton crews in order to get the work completed with their existing personnel.

Organizations that want to remain viable will need to consider other ways of doing things. Below are a couple of trends that you might want to consider to keep your business relevant and to be able to provide services during this challenging time.

Technology

The advancement of technology, including but not limited to artificial intelligence (AI) is one of those ways that can allow employers to conduct business with limited staffing. Automating repetitive tasks or utilizing AI for its information gathering and summarizing capabilities are ways that you can get more productivity from the current staff you employ.

Skills-based Hiring

Skills-based hiring means hiring for demonstrated skills and competencies even when candidates don’t have traditional degrees in the field. When opening your hiring, consider skills over degrees opens up your potential candidate pool.

Your Human Resources (HR) department or an HR consultant can help you look at your job descriptions to allow you to consider what positions may not necessarily need degrees and what skills and competencies are needed. An HR representative or consultant can also rewrite job postings to concentrate on skills, consistent with the updated job description.

If you elect to move to more of a skills-based hiring process, you will want to update your interview process to ask questions that will uncover whether an applicant has those skills and competencies. You should then train your managers on interviewing in order to assist them with obtaining information on the skills and competencies they possess. (Be careful to ensure that you are still mindful of diversity, equity, and inclusion as you consider hiring candidates based on the updated criteria.)

At Southwestern HR Consulting (SWHRC) we can help you with updating your job descriptions and postings and can handle coordination of the recruitment. Contact us at SWHRC today to find out more!
