Native American Woman working on computer and phone

Indigenous People’s Day this year is October 14, 2024. The EEOC partners with the Tribal Employment Rights Office (TERO) to ensure that Native Americans and Alaskan natives have the ability to exercise their rights as they relate to civil rights related matters. Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, as amended, gives requires employers on reservations preference to Native Americans in employment. In addition, TERO can respond to and refer cases to the EEOC as appropriate. President Biden also signed an executive order, executive order 13175, that requests consultation and collaboration with tribal offices in developing federal policies that have implications to the tribes and have developed several other documents to assist with tribal matters as they relate to the EEOC.

However, despite its efforts, the unemployment rate for Native Americans has varied over the course of the last two years. While the native American unemployment rate dropped dramatically in September to 4.8%, the Bureau of Labor Statistics shows the overall national unemployment rate fell to 4.1% in comparison, and this summer, the unemployment rate for Native Americans and Alaska natives reached 9.8%.

Becoming involved in local organizations and native communities, including Tribal Universities and colleges are ways that an employer can start building relationships and provide avenues for recruiting.
